New York Inspiration

New York…where do I begin?  I spent a total of 10 days there this month and it is now my 2nd favorite city for sure–next to Chicago, of course.  I don’t think there is an easier place to be or travel to and stay raw and mostly organic.  Everywhere you go there are fruit stands, juice bars, organic restaurants, salad cafes, smoothie bars, health food stores, etc.  I was absolutely blown away and inspired.

I consider myself pretty lucky too because my non-raw friends and boyfriend were very open to checking out the healthfood stores and raw food restaurants with me.  A lot of them really like eating an entirely raw meal with me.  This last trip (I was there Dec 29-Jan 2), we went out to eat at Caravan of Dreams, Pure Food and Wine, and Bonobos.  We also got to check out a few Whole Foods, Westerly Natural Market (a section of the GIGANTIC raw food selection is pictured below), and an organic health food store in Williamsburg.  It is always so wonderful to see my friends check out the plethora of foods that I get to eat).  It’s even better to watch them bite into a raw food dish and see a huge grin come across their face.  I wish I got a picture of this–it happened several times!

I continue to be impressed by the raw food snacks that continue to come out.  I am usually pretty selective when I come across a packaged raw food selection like the one pictured above.  Although I want to try everything out, it’s pretty pricey stuff, so I like to get things that I would never want or be able to make for myself.  I bought these biscotti crackers made by Dr. Cow’s and they were amazing.  This company is definitely onto something.  I checked out the website and they’re not selling the biscotti online but if you’re lucky enough to live in NYC, you should definitely try them out.

Pure Food and Wine doesn’t cease to amaze me and my dining mates either.  My favorite dishes this time around were the sushi appetizer, the stuffed bell pepper, the tacos, and the classic sundae.  My entree was the lasagna and I didn’t like it at all–too oily and heavy for me.  My boyfriend and I are going to try making the tacos ourselves sometime in the very near future.  I found the recipe online.  They’re going to be a bit time consuming to make but I’m sure they’ll be well worth it.  Click here if you’re interested.  Once you see it, it’s a bit more understandable why this place charges so much.

I was so impressed by the menu items of the places I visited that I’ve been inspired to start making some new and gourmet dishes for myself again.   My boyfriend and I want to make sushi for the Young + Raw potluck I’m hosting at my place next Saturday (the meetup group was inspired by the We Like it Raw 20 somethings group).  And the eraser board I use to write down my dinner/drink/dessert/cracker ideas is full again! Raw food is so much fun! I always take a menu to go so I can get ideas from their recipes when I get home.

Doing a 7 day juice fast now after all of that traveling and eating.  I’ll post more on that next time :)

XOXO,

~Lenette
