Out with the old, in with the new

(This is the best food pic I found to resemble a firework-lol)  Happy 4th of July!!

I know this isn’t the New Years Holiday coming up but I wanted to write about changing up your diet today.  It’s something I’ve been doing lately (still 90% plus raw) and have really enjoyed the benefits of.

Question: Are you consistently tweaking your diet to suit your changing lifestyle and health goals?

What I’ve been doing differently and loving is eating hardly any desserts anymore (maybe 1 serving a week), no chocolate, no dried fruits or dates, no nut butters (especially almond butter–that got a little out of control), and nothing fancy-schmancy unless I’m out at a raw food restaurant.  I know you must be thinking I’m the most boring raw foodist on the planet but I really like eating this simply.  It saves so much time too!!

It was getting to the point that I HAD to have something sweet after every meal and I wanted to break that habit.  After not eating anything sweeter than fresh fruit for a week, my taste buds stopped crying out for the uber-sweet raw food desserts!

I’ve been eating mostly smoothies, fruit (I’m obsessed with berries and grapefruit right now), salads, and collard green wraps.  Lots of hemp seeds and pumpkin seeds too.   I still make and drink my own Kombucha along with buying GT’s so that’s fun.  And I really pour on the spirulina onto my veggies and salads (the Spirulina flakes, that is).

This has really been working for me and since I was in CA early May, eating at raw food restaurants twice a day, it’s such a relief on my system and I have so much more energy.

One interesting thing I’ve tried adding into my diet last month was kefir.  My friend Anthony was the one to first suggest it to me.  I read a long post about it on his blog and then talked to him on the phone about it.  I was so intrigued by his excitedment that I couldn’t NOT get it at Whole Foods (which is now the best and biggest Whole Foods in the Midwest–it’s awesome and you must go see it if you’re ever in Chicago).  I was really hesitant to try it after not having any dairy for 4 years but figured if it really was that amazing, why not give it a chance?  I loved it because I used to love yogurt and it tasted amazingly delicious with some vanilla stevia and blueberries mixed in.  In the end, I decided that it didn’t work for me because I would feel so tired after drinking it.  I think there’s a lot of trypophan in there!  I learned a lot about kefir in the process of experimenting though and am glad I did.  Always keep in mind that the raw-vegan diet does not work for everybody.  Some people really need animal protein and fat.  Just not me apparently.

I’m going to post some fun pictures I’ve taken lately next.  Let me know if there’s anything imparticular you’d like me to blog about in the next couple posts!

Happy Holidays.  Enjoy the good company and energy.  But take care of yoruself an eat good food if that’s what makes you feel good!
