Our raw food support group
Monday, March 3rd, 2008 at 4:00 pmThis weekend, the Chicago Young and Raw group had another meetup event. This time it was raw potluck and a movie at my place. The movie was called Raw for Life and was really awesome to watch. We got to see so many of the big raw “celebs” that we read and hear about all the time in the raw food world. It was especially nice to see Karyn Calabrese, our local Chicago raw celeb, in many of the clips (go to one of her free info sessions if you haven’t already–or even if you have–for some raw-inspiration!).
It’s so awesome to hang out with other raw fooders your age. It’s so easy to organize these events–I really can’t encourage you enough to do it yourself if there aren’t any events in your area. The conversations at these events are always so interesting and the dishes are so impressive. It’s fun to think up future events too. We’re thinking of a detox or fasting event or even week! I got a few new websites and recipes to look into as well. It’s so important to have this type of support if/when going towards a raw food diet. Crucial really. And the more meetups and events the better. I think that two per month is good, which is easy to do if you’re in more than one meetup group.
Meetup.com makes it really easy. Just go online and start searching for the groups around you :)
I made some ice cream for this potluck. With all of the raw ice cream recipes floating around, I’ve been wanting to get one but have been holding back thinking that I don’t want to be making and eating ice cream all the time. If you can relate or just want a recipe for some quick and easy ice cream, here ya go:
Chocolate Ice Cream (adopted from the Raw Detox Diet book)
serves 3-5
3 frozen bananas
3 Tablespoons Cacao powder
2 tablespoons tahini
6 pitted medjool dates
some nut milk
3-4 cups ice cubes
Put first four ingredients with 1 cup ice in vitamix. Start blending on slow and gradually increase speed, using tamper to push ingredients down. Can use nut milk or coconut water to faciliate blending. Gradually add the rest or as much ice as you want. You can eat this right away or store in the freezer for later.
I started my seedlings off for my garden last night too. I’m so excited, I feel like a kid again doing a science experiment in my apartment. Broccoli, cabbage, parsley, and cucumber are first up. I have enough sprouting experience at this point in my raw food career so I’m keeping my fingers crossed that this will give me somewhat of a greenthumb with these babies… ;)
